    How electric underfloor heating works

Thin heating mats or cables sit under your tiles, laminate or engineered wood and are controlled by a thermostat with a floor sensor. They’re ideal for bathrooms, kitchens and extensions – quick to install and very comfortable underfoot.

Because the heating is buried under the floor, the electrical side has to be right first time: correct circuit size, RCD protection and careful testing at every stage.

    What's included

    • A suitable circuit from your consumer unit, with RCD protection
    • Thermostat and floor sensor fitted and connected
    • Insulation-resistance testing of the mats before, during and after laying
    • Bathroom zones and IP ratings checked
    • Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Control notification where required

Working alongside your tiler or builder

We fit in with your project: first fix before the floor goes down, testing while the mats are laid, and final connection after tiling. Testing at each stage means any damage to a mat is caught while it can still be fixed – not after the tiles are on.

    FAQs

    Electric Underfloor Heating FAQs

Can you supply the heating mats?

We can supply suitable mats, or connect a kit you've already bought – we check it's suitable first.

Does it need its own circuit?

Larger areas usually need a dedicated circuit; small bathrooms can sometimes use an existing one. We check before quoting.

Which floors can it go under?

Tiles and stone are most common. Many systems also suit laminate, vinyl and engineered wood – check the manufacturer's guidance.

    Is it expensive to run?

Running cost depends on room size, insulation and how long it's on. A thermostat with a timer and floor sensor keeps it efficient.

    Is it notifiable work?

A new circuit is notifiable under Part P. As a NICEIC-registered contractor we self-certify and notify Building Control.
