    FAQs

    Smoke & CO Alarm FAQs

Should I choose mains-powered or battery alarms?

Mains-powered alarms with a battery backup are more reliable, and are required in new builds and many major refurbishments.

    What does "interlinked" mean?

Interlinked alarms are connected, so when one detects smoke, heat or CO, every alarm in the home sounds – giving you the earliest possible warning.

How often should alarms be replaced?

Most smoke and CO alarms last around 10 years. Check the date on the back of each alarm.

Who tests the alarms in a rented home?

Landlords must make sure alarms work at the start of each tenancy. After that, tenants should test them regularly and report any faults.

Can you do this at the same time as an EICR?

Yes – just mention it when you book your EICR.
