Is your fuse box due an upgrade?

Your consumer unit (fuse box) is your home’s first line of defence against electric shock and electrical fire. Older boards often lack the RCD protection that modern regulations require, and many were made from materials that aren’t fire-resistant. Here are the most common signs it’s time to upgrade:

    • Old rewireable fuses with fuse wire
    • A plastic or wooden-backed board
    • No RCD protection – no "test" button
    • Breakers that trip regularly
    • Scorch marks, buzzing or a burning smell
    • An EICR has flagged it as C2 / unsatisfactory
    • You're adding an EV charger, kitchen or extension
    • You're buying, selling or letting the property

    What's included in every upgrade

    • Testing of your existing circuits before we start, so there are no surprises on the day
    • A new metal-clad consumer unit to the current 18th Edition wiring regulations (BS 7671)
    • RCD or RCBO protection on every circuit
    • Surge protection (SPD) where the regulations require it
    • Main earthing and bonding checked, and upgraded if needed
    • Clear, typed circuit labelling
    • Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Control notification (Part P)
    • A tidy finish – old board and all waste taken away

RCD board or full RCBO board?

Both meet the regulations – the difference is what happens when something trips.

How it worksCircuits share two RCDsEvery circuit has its own protection
When one circuit faultsCan trip around half the houseOnly that circuit goes off
Finding faultsSlower – several circuits to checkFaster – you know exactly which circuit

    What affects the price?

Every home is different, so we don’t guess. The price depends mainly on:

    1. Number of circuits – more circuits means a bigger board.
    2. RCD or RCBO – full RCBO boards cost more but give better protection.
    3. Earthing and bonding – older properties sometimes need these upgrading.
    4. Existing faults – modern protection can reveal hidden faults that need fixing first.

After a quick chat (photos of your current board help), we’ll give you a fixed price – and that’s what you pay.

    FAQs

    Consumer Unit Upgrade FAQs

How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?

Most homes are done in a single day. The power is off for part of that time – we'll let you know roughly when so you can plan around it.

How much does a consumer unit upgrade cost?

It depends on the number of circuits, whether you choose RCDs or RCBOs, and the condition of your earthing and bonding. We give you a fixed price before booking, with no hidden extras.

Why do you test the circuits first?

Modern RCD protection is much more sensitive than old fuses, so it can reveal faults that were hiding – such as damaged cable or a faulty appliance. Testing first means we can tell you about anything before you commit, rather than on the day.

Does replacing a consumer unit need Building Control approval?

Yes – it is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NICEIC-registered contractor we can self-certify the work and notify Building Control for you.

Is my old fuse box dangerous?

Not necessarily, but older boards without RCDs don't give the protection against electric shock that modern ones do. If you're unsure, we can check it and give you honest advice.

Do I need an upgrade before installing an EV charger?

Often, yes. An EV charger is a large new load and needs suitable protection. We check your existing board and tell you whether an upgrade is needed.
